Cold Foil vs Hot Stamping: Which One for Your Gift Box?

Cold Foil vs Hot Stamping: What's the Difference?

If you've ever held a luxury gift box and wondered how that metallic shine got there, it was probably one of two processes: cold foil or hot stamping (often called hot foil). They look similar on the shelf, but they work very differently — and choosing the wrong one can cost you money or limit your design.

We run both processes in our own workshop in Shanghai, so here's an honest comparison from the factory floor.

Hot Stamping: The Classic

Hot stamping uses a heated metal die to press metallic foil onto the paper. The heat activates the adhesive, and the foil bonds only where the die touches. It's been the industry standard for decades.

Best for: crisp logos, fine text, small-area metallic accents on premium boxes. The edges are sharp, the finish is dense and rich.

Limitations: every design needs a custom metal die (cost + lead time). Large-area coverage is expensive. Fine halftone gradients are difficult.

Cold Foil: The Modern Alternative

Cold foil applies foil with UV-curable adhesive printed by a standard printing plate — no heat, no metal die. The foil transfers wherever the adhesive was printed, then gets cured under UV light.

Best for: large-area metallic coverage, gradients, and — this is the key advantage — overprinting. Because cold foil goes down flat, you can print CMYK directly on top of it, creating metallic colors and holographic effects that hot stamping simply cannot produce.

Limitations: the metallic finish is slightly less dense than hot stamping on uncoated papers. Works best on coated stock.

Our Recommendation

For most rigid gift boxes: use cold foil for large decorative areas and holographic effects, hot stamping for your logo and fine details. The two processes combine beautifully — and because we do both in-house, there's no outsourcing delay or color mismatch between vendors.
